Background of the Study: Maternal health is a critical indicator of the overall health status of a population, and improving maternal outcomes is one of the key targets of global health initiatives, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (Hassan et al., 2024). In Nigeria, particularly in Zamfara State, maternal mortality remains a significant concern, with rural areas suffering the most from poor access to maternal healthcare services, inadequate skilled birth attendants, and limited prenatal education (Alhassan et al., 2023). Nurses, through their roles in community outreach programs, are pivotal in improving maternal health by providing essential health education, promoting antenatal care, and encouraging the use of skilled birth attendants.
Community outreach programs, which often include health education campaigns, immunizations, and maternal health screenings, are designed to overcome the barriers that rural women face in accessing healthcare services. These programs, particularly those led by nurses, aim to increase awareness about the importance of prenatal care, promote healthy practices, and improve access to maternal health services (Olusola et al., 2023). This study investigates how nurses are contributing to improving maternal health in Zamfara State through community outreach and explores the challenges and successes of these programs.
Statement of the Problem: Maternal health remains a challenge in Zamfara State, with high maternal mortality rates linked to inadequate healthcare access, low awareness of maternal health, and traditional practices. Nurses play a significant role in maternal health, especially through outreach programs that aim to educate communities on the importance of prenatal care and skilled delivery. However, the extent to which nurses’ outreach efforts impact maternal health outcomes in the region has not been thoroughly examined. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the role of nurses in improving maternal health through community outreach programs in Zamfara State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on the role of nurses in maternal health improvement through community outreach programs in Zamfara State. Limitations include possible challenges in measuring the long-term impact of outreach programs and difficulty in accessing data from remote areas due to geographical barriers and security concerns.
